Calvary’s Stand

Calvary’s Stand is the name of our newsletter.  It’s purpose is to spread the good news of the gospel, to point out apostasy, and to proclaim the stand that we at Calvary Baptist Church have decided to make based on the final authority of our faith and practice, (The Bible).

The following are articles and letters written by members, their families and friends of Calvary Baptist Church.  If you would like to receive a copy of our newsletter by mail, let us know.  As long as we can afford to, we will send them free of charge.  It is a mission of our church to spread the truths of God’s word were ever we can.

Bible Truths About the Church  “ As we begin our research of biblical truths about the church, there are several questions that one may ask. Where did the church begin?  Who makes up the church?  Can a certain denomination lay claims upon being the church?  These and other questions we will address as we look at a short preview of the church.  I believe it is vital that any time you want to find truth about biblical questions; you need to go to the source of truth itself, the Holy Bible (KJV 1611).  Such is the case with the study of the church. There are those that lay claims that they are the church and even go as far to say that they have its divine authority.  May I suggest that you and I evaluate their claims against what the Lord Jesus Christ himself taught?”

Eternal Security  “ I had read these verses in Revelations, and others concerning the second death and the horrors thereof, and the question pressed harder on my mind. Can a man be exempt from this second death, and the next moment be back on the road to everlasting punishment in hell?  Then the Lord spoke softly to my heart, when I saved you, I gave you eternal life.  A new light was spread upon this subject as I thought to myself, eternal life; everlasting life.  Thats it!”

Commitment  “ A man in England preached a sermon one night in the late Nineteenth Century to only a handful of people.  George Greenfield, a man in his early twenties, was seated in the audience.  The man closed the sermon by saying, “I am not calling you to a life of ease, I am calling you to a life of deprivation, trial, and difficulty.  Tonight, do not walk the aisle if you are not going to commit it all.”

George Greenfield walked forward and in front of a small group of people said, “Tonight, I am committing my all.”

How to Identify a Church for You  “ One of the big questions that people are asking today is where will I attend church? Where will I place my membership?  These are logical questions that one may have, but too many times the means by which we make our choice is not a biblical one.”

God’s Inspired Translation  “ I believe that God created the heavens and the earth and all the fullness thereof.  That is some serious inspiration.  I also believe that He keeps the sun and moon in their orbit, gravity working properly and sustains the very life that exists all around us.  That is preservation.  Certainly a God capable of creating this vast universe is capable of creating a perfect Bible in it’s original manuscripts.  And most Christians would agree with me on that point.  But many Christians believe that, though God has preserved life from the time of creation, He has not preserved his word to this present generation.”

Somethings Fishy in the Modern Bibles  “A whale is not a fish, and a fish is not a whale.  That is a contradiction!”  This comment I read on a website sparked my interest.  This person was claiming the bible to be in error due to the fact that the book of Jonah says in Chapter 1 verse 17, “Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.”  Then the book of Matthew says in chapter 12 verse 40 “ For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”

The Knowledge of the Bible or the Knowledge of Men “ I would like to point out that while mans knowledge is ever changing, God’s knowledge is infinitely stable.  God has never learned something new or come to any realization.  His knowledge is complete from everlasting to everlasting.”

Easter In Acts 12:4  “ I believe the Bible to be perfect and without error.  Yet every year or so the Bible correctors of our day give us a “better” or “more accurate” translation...  You may have at some time heard someone claim the King James Bible to be in error in Acts chapter 12.”

Bible Business  “ God chose to judge all of Jerusalem for this perverting of his work.  If those who publish bibles really loved God’s word they would not be profiting from it.  The reward of profit is the only feasible reason why we have over 200 bible versions available to us today.  The bible is the number one top selling book of all time and the bible publishers are jumping onto the money train.”

Satan’s Greatest Attack  “ ... It is said that we are in the middle of a spiritual war.  If this is so, who is our enemy?  Who is it against whom we must “fight the good fight”?  If you are a student of the bible you know the answer.  Ephesians 6:12 reads -  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

Are you a Diamond or a Lump of Coal  “ ... The Bible is full of parallels.  In every corner of the Bible you will find God comparing spiritual matters with the physical.  I would like to draw a parallel using the characteristics of a diamond and a lump of coal.”

Why Attack the 10 Commandments  “ ... If 85% of Americans were really Christians; abortion would not be legal, homosexuals would not have such political power, pornography would not be booming, we would not need a war on drugs, prayer and the Bible would be in our schools, and the Ten Commandments would be happily welcome on public property.”

Why Go to Church  “ Many people who say they are Christians don’t go to church.  When asked why, many will answer that it is not necessary to go to church to be saved.  We agree!  Salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.  Many have come to know Jesus as their personal saviour outside of church.

So why do we go to church?  Is it really important?  Can’t we live just as good at home? ”

THE "WOLF" VERSES OF SCRIPTURE  “ There are a total of twelve! Let's study them together!

Wolves in Scripture are mentioned by Moses, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Jesus and Paul!

They must be important!”

   By: Dr. Mike Bagwell

Is Jesus God?  “ Don't be fooled by what people tell you. SEARCH THE SCRIPTURES and see for yourself. If you are wondering as to whether Christ is God or not, take this and study it out for yourself. If you really desire to know the truth then God has promised to show you if you seek it.”

Tried by Fire  “ Job here corrects himself. In the beginning of the chapter we find him saying: "Even today is my complaint bitter: my stroke is heavier than my groaning" (vv. 1, 2). Poor Job felt that his lot was unbearable. But he recovers himself. He checks his hasty outburst and revises his impetuous decision. How often we all have to correct ourselves! Only One has ever walked this earth who never had occasion to do so..”

How to Find the Will of God “ No subject is more intriguing to the believer. No topic is more timely to the average Christian. Nothing you can discuss has more relevance than this one. It affects every decision we make; every choice we consider; every turn we take on the highway of life. It is the subject of how to find the will of God.”

How to Bear Sorrow“ You are passing through a time of deep sorrow. The love on which you are trusting has suddenly failed you and dried up like a brook in the desert—now a dwindling stream, then shallow pools and at last drought. You are always listening for footsteps that do not come, waiting for a word that is not spoken, pining for a reply that tarries overdue.”
